The Little Big Dawg and His Family: A Tale of Love, Toys, and Tail Chasing

In the heart of Denver lives a small but mighty family that’s sure to steal your heart. It all began with a tiny, spirited Min Pin named Rico, a little dog with the heart of a giant. Known affectionately as the “Little Big Dawg,” Rico’s journey with us has been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with laughter, love, and a few unforgettable moments.
Rico entered our lives at just four weeks old, a tiny bundle of energy rescued from a situation that suggested he was one of many in need. Despite his small size, Rico immediately proved he had a heart that could match any giant dog’s. From the moment we brought him home, his antics brought joy and hilarity to our days.
One of the first things we did for Rico was get him a toy. Initially, it was a small, dachshund-like toy, just the right size for him. But as he grew and showed off his playful nature, we upgraded his toys to match his enthusiasm. We watched in amazement as Rico, barely five pounds of dog, managed to drag around a six-foot-long toy with a wagging tail and a look of pure delight. It was a sight that never failed to make us laugh.
Over the years, Rico has become a beloved member of our family. Now at 14 years old, he’s a bit of an old-timer, but he’s still as spirited as ever. He used to grab his leash in his mouth and pull us along, effectively taking us for a walk. Rico’s tricks included chasing his tail on command, shaking hands, and giving high fives, showcasing his sharp mind and playful spirit.
One memorable moment that stands out is the time Rico took a little too literally the command “gimme that.” Upon discovering a vole in the garage, Rico eagerly swallowed it whole when told to give it up. My wife was horrified, but from then on, if we wanted him to eat something, “gimme that” was the magic phrase, and down it would go. His fearless attitude extended to his dislike for the mailman, who would find his mail shredded to bits thanks to Rico’s enthusiastic “greeting.”
Rico’s signature accessory was his spiked collar, a fitting testament to his tough yet lovable demeanor. Even now, as he battles the effects of aging with cataracts and a bad hip, we gladly help him with the stairs and cherish every moment we have with him. Rico still enjoys his food, cantaloupe included, and we believe he deserves every treat he can get.
A few years after settling back in Denver, our family grew with the addition of Roxy, a Min Chi we rescued. Roxy was a wonderful companion, but it was Rexy, a purebred Min Pin we brought into our lives next, who truly captured Rico’s heart. Rexy and Rico quickly became inseparable, sharing a bond that was as deep as it was endearing. Their love story led to the birth of Rocko, a delightful puppy who inherited his father’s big heart.
Rocko, now five years old, is the embodiment of his father’s spirit. He adores my wife and has taken on the role of the family’s new little big dawg. Rocko’s love for walks is evident in his companionship with Maggie, our German Shepherd, who serves as his older auntie. One of Rocko’s most treasured possessions is an old, mangled stuffed monkey, affectionately called “Uggie.” This toy, originally Rico’s, has now found a new home with Rocko, who carries it around with the same pride and joy his father once did.
Occasionally, we dress up our little pack in various costumes, and we fondly refer to them as “the littles.” They bring us endless joy and are an integral part of our family. Each one, from Rico to Rocko, holds a special place in our hearts, and their antics remind us daily of the simple joys of life.
