Teaching Your Dog Basic Commands

Training your dog helps with safety, behavior, and bonding. Here’s how to teach five essential commands.

1. Sit

✅ Helps with impulse control.

1. Hold a treat near their nose.

2. Move it up so their bottom lowers.

3. Say “Sit”, then reward.

2. Stay

✅ Keeps your dog from moving when they shouldn’t.

1. Ask them to sit.

2. Hold your hand up and say “Stay”.

3. Come

4. Down

3. Say “Down”, then reward when they lie down.

5. Leave It

✅ Stops them from grabbing harmful items.

1. Show a treat in your closed hand.

2. When they stop trying to take it, say “Leave it” and reward with another treat.

Training Tips

✔ Be consistent – Use the same words and gestures.

✔ Keep sessions short – 5–10 minutes a few times daily.

✔ Train in different locations – Helps them obey anywhere.
