Denver Dumb Friends League has rebranded itself as Humane Colorado,

After 115 years, the Denver Dumb Friends League has rebranded itself as Humane Colorado, marking a significant evolution in the organization’s history. Established in 1910, the original name was inspired by the 1897 London animal charity “Our Dumb Friends League,” using “dumb” to mean “lacking the power of speech.” Over time, however, the term “dumb” has evolved to commonly mean “unintelligent,” leading to misunderstandings and concerns about insensitivity. 

The decision to rebrand was driven by feedback indicating that the previous name was outdated and potentially off-putting, creating barriers for potential adopters, volunteers, and donors. Dr. Apryl Steele, president and CEO of Humane Colorado, stated that the new name “reflects our rich history, while also embodying our values, vision, and our mission.” 

The rebranding process involved extensive research and collaboration over several years, ensuring that the new identity aligns with the organization’s mission to improve the lives of pets, people, and communities. The new name aims to eliminate confusion and better position the organization as a compassionate and forward-thinking advocate for animals and their caregivers. 

Humane Colorado remains committed to its mission of ending pet homelessness and animal suffering. In the fiscal year 2024 alone, the organization welcomed 20,598 homeless pets across its three shelters and provided 343,781 nights of safety.  The rebranding represents a natural step forward, reflecting the organization’s continued dedication to improving animal welfare in Colorado and beyond.
