Camping With Your Dog: Beginner Checklist
Camping with your dog can be peaceful, funny and memorable. Dogs love new smells, campfire routines, outdoor naps and time with their people. But camping also brings new challenges: wildlife, weather, rules, other campers, nighttime sounds and limited access to supplies.
If you are new to camping with dogs, start simple. Choose a dog-friendly location, plan ahead and pack the basics.

Check Dog Rules Before Booking
Campgrounds have different rules. Some welcome dogs. Some limit where dogs can go. Some require leashes at all times. Check the rules before booking and respect them when you arrive.
Pack a Dog Camping Kit
- Food and treats
- Fresh water and bowl
- Leash and backup leash
- Waste bags
- Bed or blanket
- Towel
- Medication if needed
- Updated ID tag
- Favorite toy or chew
Pack more than you think you need, especially water and cleanup supplies.
Create a Dog Rest Spot
Your dog needs a place to settle at camp. A bed, blanket or mat can help them understand where to rest. This is useful around tents, picnic tables and camp chairs.
A familiar item from home can make the campsite feel safer.
Practice Campsite Manners
Not every camper wants to meet your dog. Keep your dog close, avoid excessive barking and do not let them wander into neighboring campsites. Good campsite manners help keep campgrounds dog-friendly.
Watch Weather and Wildlife
Outdoor conditions can change quickly. Keep your dog warm when it is cold, cool when it is hot and away from wildlife. Do not leave food where animals can find it.
Strong, curious breeds may need extra management in new outdoor environments.
Start With One Night
If your dog has never camped before, try one night close to home. This gives you a chance to learn what your dog needs before planning a longer trip.
Camping with dogs gets easier with practice. Build routines, pack thoughtfully and make the trip about enjoying time together.
